November 9 | Take Care Of The Things You Already Have : An Upcycling Class For People Who Want To Learn How To Sew And Look Good Doing It
Join us for an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into your wardrobe with "Take Care Of The Things You Already Have," a hands-on upcycling class designed for anyone looking to learn the art of sewing while embracing a sustainable lifestyle!
When: Saturday November 9th
Time: 12 PM - 6 PM
Where: Shop Slow, South Lamar Boulevard, Austin, TX, USA
Class Size: one small group of 6, We are keeping this class very small, ensuring an intimate and hands-on learning experience for all participants!
This class is perfect for beginners and seasoned sewists alike who want to elevate their personal style while making the most out of what they already own. This is a BYOSM (bring your own sewing machine!!!) class! This way, you can learn on your own machine.
In this engaging workshop, you'll gain valuable skills in using sewing machines, mending garments, and creatively altering your existing clothing. Together, we will explore fundamental techniques such as DIY clothing modifications, hand mending, embroidery, and fabric scrap collage, allowing you to turn those pieces in your “need to be mended” pile into fashionable, wear-ready items.
But that’s not all! We’ll also host a fun clothing swap where you can donate and discover new pieces from other participants.
What to Bring: Your own clothes to modify, any sentimental items you want to incorporate, and **your own sewing machine**.
About the Artist: Corinne Loperfido (she/her) is a passionate advocate for sustainable fashion and a skilled artist with a rich background in costume design and clothing modification. With years of experience in personal and editorial fashion styling, Corinne brings a wealth of knowledge about how to enhance personal style while prioritizing slow fashion and upcycling. She is committed to creating a supportive and engaging environment where you can explore your creativity and refine your sewing skills.
Clothing Architect Aaron Torres made his professional design debut 18 years ago designing for Urban Outfitters' Urban Renewal upcycled line. Since then he's worked as a tailor, production stitcher and junior designer until starting his own sustainable clothing brand Sleep, Never in 2015. Alchemizing pre-existing materials and clothing into new high-quality designs, Sleep, Never crafts elevated clothing focused on quality, fit and size inclusivity.
Class Fee: $222 - $333 on a sliding scale.
Sliding Scale Explanation: We believe that financial barriers should never prevent anyone from accessing valuable skills and experiences. Our sliding scale fee structure allows participants to choose what they can afford while still supporting the cost of running the class. If you're financially stable, we encourage you to pay toward the higher end of the scale, which helps subsidize those who may be experiencing financial difficulties. No matter where you land on the scale, your participation is important to us, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming space for everyone.
Let’s gather, create, and care for the clothes you already love while learning valuable sewing skills together! Join us in creating a one-of-a-kind wardrobe that truly reflects your personal style.
